Small Steps For a Better World

I could complain all day about the injustice in the world, but it won't make much of a difference.
The key is to take action, in small or large ways to help improve our lot. I've thought of a few things
that people can do to make a positive difference in the world. Here are some small steps that you
can take to make the world a better place.

Vote

Why should anyone respect democracy when less than half of us bother to vote? Even if you don't like anyone
in the election, get down to the polls and at least spoil your ballot. If political parties knew that everyone voted,
they would surely have to better represent us. Mobilize your family, your friends and your neighbours.
Get them to the polls.

Think Critically

Five giant companies own almost everything you see on television, hear on the radio and read in the
newspaper. It is not always in their interest to keep you well informed. They want you to buy things. They try to
scare you into accepting the status quo. There is a whole lot of propaganda out there. Look at media with a
critical eye. Think about the issues logically and rationally. Don't let yourself be deceived. 2+2 does not equal 5.
Trust your instincts. You are probably right.

Talk to Your Neighbours

Its strange how we can live next door to someone for years and not even know their name. Many of us live in a state
of detachment from our community. It is amazing how much a smile or a simple "hello" can do to break the ice.
Talk to your neighbours about the issues that affect you and them. You are not alone. There is more solidarity
than you may realize. In each other we can find strength. We are all one family, all here together.

Talk to Your Kids

It may sound cliche, but it is true, the children are the future. The values you instill in them are the values that
will govern the world a few decades from now. Teach them to think for themselves. Teach them to trust their
hearts. Teach them to make the world a better place. They will be taking care of us one day.

Contact Your Elected Officials

If you don't agree with something that's happening, by all means, make a phone call, send an e-mail, write a letter
or pay a visit to the people in government who are supposed to represent you. Let them know what you think
about an issue. This is participation in democracy. These people work for you. It is their job to listen.
Make yourself heard.

Speak Up

Freedom of speech is meaningless if we don't speak up when we see injustice. Evil triumphs when good people
stay silent. Let those who would oppress hear your disapproval. In a chat room or a class room, at the dinner
table or at the water cooler, in a coffee shop or at a protest march, make your voice heard.

Vote With Your Wallet

Become informed as to the human rights records of the brands you buy. Tell your friends what these companies
do. Don't buy from companies that brutally exploit their workers, the environment, and ultimately, you. Your
money is consent for them to continue their unjust business practices. Refuse to give them your consent.

Walk

Is it necessary to drive everywhere? If you have only a short distance to go, get out of the car, get some
exercise, and spare the planet your exhaust. Walking gives you time to contemplate, relieves stress and doesn't
pollute.
